What are double glazed units for windows and doors?
Double glazed units use two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, usually filled with argon gas. That cavity is the whole difference between double and single glazing: less heat in, less heat out, less noise and less condensation.
Benefits of double glazing in Melbourne
Lower heating and cooling bills
The sealed cavity and the argon in it act as a thermal barrier. Save up to 30% on household energy bills.
Steadier indoor temperature
Heat that reaches the outer pane is not passed through to the inner pane, so rooms stay warmer in winter and hold air-conditioned air in summer.
Less noise
The sealed cavity works as an acoustic buffer, significantly reducing traffic and neighbourhood noise.
Less condensation
The inner pane stays close to room temperature, so there is no cold surface for moisture to form on.
Less fading
Double glazing reduces UV, which slows fading of furniture, carpets and curtains.
Failed double glazed units
If a double glazed unit has misted up between the panes, the seal on that unit has failed and moisture has got into the cavity. Once that happens the unit cannot be dried out or repaired; instead, the glass unit must be replaced.
We replace failed and misted double glazed units as part of our window glass repair service. Send a photo of the foggy pane and rough measurements and we will quote for the replacement.

Are double glazed windows worth it in Melbourne?
For most homes, yes. You could save up to 30% from double glazing and that saving repeats every year. Add lower noise, less condensation and steadier temperatures, and the higher upfront cost pays back over the life of the windows.
Why is argon gas used in double glazed windows?
Argon is a colourless, odourless gas that conducts heat less readily than air, so an argon-filled cavity insulates better. It is completely safe, does not leak and never needs refilling for the life of the window. Argon-filled double glazed windows earn some of the highest ratings under Australia’s window energy rating scheme.
Does Economy Glass retrofit or install double glazing?
No. We replace damaged, failed and misted double glazed units, but we do not install or retrofit new double glazing.
Does double glazing reduce noise?
Yes. The sealed cavity between the two panes acts as an acoustic buffer as well as a thermal one, making double glazed windows semi-soundproof against traffic and neighbourhood noise.
