Window glass replacement

Window glass replacement across Melbourne’s western suburbs, from a single cracked pane to a fully shattered window.

Window repairs: what we fix

We replace glass in timber and aluminium windows, as well as hinged and sliding doors. Typical jobs:

Cracked or chipped panes
Shattered glass after a break-in, storm or accident
Condensation or misting between the panes of a double glazed unit
Broken glass in doors, sidelights and shopfronts

Window glass repair or replacement?

A broken window leaves your home or business open to the weather and to break-ins. We hold a large stock of glass at our Hoppers Crossing workshop, so common window sizes are replaced quickly and many jobs are finished within the day.

Minor surface scratches can sometimes be polished out. A large scratch, a crack or a break means the panel is replaced.

If moisture has crept between the panes of a double glazed window, the sealed unit has failed and is replaced as a unit.

We give you a straight answer before any work starts.

Types of window glass we replace

Most windows hold one of three glass types, and the break pattern tells us which.

Doors, low and tall windows and other areas prone to human impact must be glazed in safety glass under Australian Standard AS 1288 and the Building Code of Australia. See our Types of Window Glass guide and our Safety Glass page.

  • Float (annealed) glass: Standard window glass, found in most timber and aluminium windows. It breaks into shards. We cut it to size on site from stock.
  • Laminated safety glass: Two sheets bonded to a plastic interlayer. It cracks in a spider-web pattern but stays in the frame. A strong choice for security and noise.
  • Toughened safety glass: Breaks into small granular pieces rather than sharp shards. It is made to measure and cannot be cut or drilled once manufactured.

Window glass replacement cost

Our guide to how much it costs to fix a broken window puts the cost of repairing a standard window with no special glass requirement at between $250 and $400.

Ultimately, the cost depends on:

Glass type

Float glass is the most economical; toughened and laminated safety glass cost more.

Size of the pane

Larger panes use more glass and take more handling.

Access

Windows above ground level need special ladders or equipment.

Labour and site survey

Some jobs are quoted from a photo; others need a visit to measure.

How much does window glass replacement cost in Melbourne?

Glass in a standard window with no special glass requirement can be replaced for $250 to $400. Toughened or laminated safety glass, large panes and windows above ground level cost more. Send us a photo of the window from outside and we will quote the actual job.

Often, yes. We hold a large stock of glass at our Hoppers Crossing workshop, so many standard window replacements are completed within the day. When you call, tell us the window size, the room, the floor level and how the glass looks after breaking (shards or small granular pieces) and we will confirm what is possible for your job.

It depends on where the window is. Australian Standard AS 1288 and the Building Code of Australia require toughened or laminated safety glass in areas prone to human impact, such as doors, sidelights and low and tall windows. We will tell you whether safety glass is required.

Minor scratches can sometimes be polished out, but a crack, chip or break means the panel must be replaced. Cracked glass weakens further over time and can fall out of the frame, so it is best replaced promptly rather than taped over.

We primarily service Melbourne’s western suburbs across the Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Brimbank and Melton council areas, including Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook, Altona, Footscray, Sunshine, Williamstown and Essendon. We occasionally take larger jobs a bit further out, so call to check your address.
