Economy Glass is a glazier in Newport for the kind of glass its houses need. Newport is one of the older suburbs of Hobsons Bay, built up around the railway workshops with streets of Victorian and Edwardian weatherboards and brick homes, most of them with timber sash windows and glass front doors. We reglaze those windows, replace broken panes and fit new shower screens and mirrors, working out of our showroom and warehouse at 415 Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing. We have served Hobsons Bay for over 45 years and are rated 4.9 stars across more than 600 Google reviews.

Newport’s old windows need a glazier used to timber sashes, putty and sizes that were never standard. We remove the broken pane, clean the rebate, cut new glass to the exact size and reseal it so the sash runs as before. Because our warehouse in Hoppers Crossing carries a large stock of glass, many broken windows can be replaced within the day. Where the pane is in a door, a side light or a low window, we fit toughened or laminated safety glass to Australian Standard 1288, in line with the Building Code of Australia. Our glass repairs page lists what we fix; for break-ins and storm damage, see emergency glass repairs.
Replacing a pane should not mean replacing a hundred-year-old window. We match the thickness of the original glass so the sash weights still balance, and we can fit thicker or safety glass where an opening needs it. Newport’s newer townhouses and the units near the station have aluminium windows and sliding doors, and we replace glass in those too. Our window glass repairs page explains what to measure and what to photograph for a quote.
Bathrooms in Newport’s period homes are often small, often a lean-to converted decades ago, so a screen has to be made to fit. We supply and install framed, semi-frameless, frameless and sliding shower screens in toughened safety glass, measured on site. The frameless shower screens page shows the minimal look that opens up a narrow bathroom, and shower screen repairs covers a cracked panel or a hinge that has let go.

Yes. That is most of our Newport work. The broken pane and old putty come out, new glass is cut to the exact size and sealed in, and the sash, cords and weights stay as they are. If the window is low or beside a door, the new pane will be safety glass to Australian Standard 1288.
